Kommentar
John Flaxmann Esq. R. A. (*6.07.1755 York - † 7.12.1826 London), studierte - 15jährig nach Ausbildung im Atelier des Vaters und ohne spezifische Schulbildung - Bildhauerei an der Londoner Akademie.
1775 wurde er für die Wedgwood Fabrik engagiert. 1800 wurde er Mitglied der Akademie und 1810 Professor für Bildhauerei. Die dort ab 1811 gehaltenen Vorlesungen erschienen mit einem Nachruf des Bildhauers Westmacott 1829. Darin wird an erster Stelle englische Skulptur, danach die ägyptische und griechische abgehandelt. Erst dann folgt eine Darlegung grundsätzlicher Themen: Science, Beauty, Composition, Stile, Drappery, Antiquity, Modern Art.
Zur Proportion schrieb er auf den Seiten 24, 55, 109, 114, 117, 157, 164, 178, 184 - 185, 202 - 203, 208, 222, Seine Proportionslehre ist als knapper Anhang auf ein männliches Idealschema reduziert, wie es für Autoren des Klassizismus nicht unüblich gewesen ist (Plate 26 - 28).
